Waiwhero Forest

Waiwhero South
Please refer to Map and or Google Earth tracks to try and visualise where you are going in conjunction with this text! There are a lot of turn offs and its quite easy to get lost in there!

GPS co-ordinates can be taken from Google Earth by placing your cursor over the point you want and looking at the bottom of the screen. You can change the format in the options under the tools toolbar.

Getting there!
Head out from Nelson toward Motueka and take the inland highway through Upper Moutere and carry on toward Motueka about 11.5km and just before you get to the Riverside Community, there is a road off to the left called Edwards Road.
Turn left and drive straight all the way down to the corner at the hill and turn left toward Ngatimoti. About two km further on you will find yourself at the top of a saddle; this is where you enter the Waiwhero south forest along Ridge Road.

A Suggested way to ride the tracks in sections

The Stingers and Turning Point
Head along Ridge Road for about 3.6km to Wilkinson Rd passing various roads off to the left. Turn left here and 70 meters down on the left is the entrance to the first of the"Stinger" series of tracks.
"Stinger 1" is roughly 500 metres long and ends up further down Wilkinson road. Across the road and down a tad is the entrance to "Stingerless" which take you 200 meters further down then back to Wilkinson Road. 40 meters down on the left you is the entrance to "Stinger 2" with 400 meters of primo riding then back on to Wilkinson road again.
At this point, blast down the road taking the left fork all the way down to the skid site at the bottom, (about 0.75 km). In the  far right corner of the skid site, you will find the semi hidden entrance to "Turning point" Ride this track down, through the creek at the bottom, and then back up again to another skid site. From here ride all the way back up Wilkinson Road to the top where you started or ride the Stinger tracks in the other direction.

Redcoats
Head back along Ridge road about 1.1km until you reach Majuba Road, which is a major Y intersection, right into Majuba Road and ride down it just over 1km. You will notice a bit of single track going off to the left. Ignore it and shortly after there is a firebreak road dropping off to the right. Blast your way down the firebreak (watching for fallen trees and slippery bits!) almost exactly 1km down this fun bit you will need to find a steep little turn off to the left, (if you first carry on past this entrance to where a tree is across the firebreak and carry around the tree, there is a small figure-of-8 loop of single-track on the right which lines you up with the Redcoats entrance)   granny your way up this (not far) and then sample the sweet delights of Redcoats proper! Watching out for a small drop that may grab you by surprise along the way. After a while the track comes out of the forest and into some broom and gorse, just follow the tyre tracks along and out past the farmhouse to the bottom of Majuba Road. (you will need to cross a fence near the house).
Once on Majuba road, ride it all the way back up to the top taking in a firebreak on the right and the small bit of single-track you previously ignored on the way .

Ziggy
Once back at the Ridge Rd intersection turn right and head back toward the carpark for about 300meters.
Looking carefully you will find the entrance to Ziggy. The entrance and exit are very close to each other, you want the one away from the carpark! (doesn≠t really matter).
Ziggy is a fun little loop in some native bush. Ride down until you meet the firebreak that crosses the bottom, turn right and ride along that for about 50 meters then find the entrance and turn right and back up the other leg of Ziggy back to near where you started from.

The Woods Tracks (Including Cyprus Avenue)
From the exit of Ziggy, on Ridge Rd ride back about 400meters to the junction with Woods Road which heads to the right.
Where you turn into Woods Road, there is a small side track on the right, ride up this for about 120 meters and then look to the right and find the entrance to Cyprus Ave.It is easy to miss if you go too fast.
This track has a wonderful switchback in the middle that proved to be pretty slippery in the wet, but fine otherwise. There is an exit back to the road here if you don't want to do the switchback. Alternatively you can walk it and enjoy the rest of the track to where it comes back out to woods Road.
When you exit Cyprus you will need to turn left UP the road for a few meters and look for an entrance to the next track on the opposite side of the road to where you exited.
Ride "Woods 2" down and back out to Woods Road.
Ride down Woods road about 150 meters and look for a track in on the right. This track is quite a muddle of tracks all crossing each other. Whichever way you take you will end up at the  bottom and over a drop over a root, from here it≠s a matter of riding the "trials" track back along to Woods Road. Beware here as there are a few side tracks made by motorbikes, if it looks steep, then its not the MTB track!
Ride a further 50 meters down Woods Road and find another track on the right. This is a good blast right down to the bottom.
Ride back up Woods Road after this about 500 meters and look for a track in to the right (looking up the road) ride this track (if you can follow the bloody thing... it's a bit wishy washy!) and end up (if your lucky) back out on Woods Road. You may end up on the exit road at the bottom instead, if this is the case turn right and head back to Woods Road. If you have come out on Woods road at the right place, then just over the road you can drop into another track back to the bottom.
Once you have finished these tracks, ride all the way back to the top of Woods Road.

Sabbatical
At the junction of Ridge Road and Woods Road, over the bank on the right you will find the entrance to "Sabbatical" This track has a bit of a ramp in the middle of it, that I suggest you have a look at before you ride it, as it does a sort of swap from one side to the other of the tree it crosses which may catch you out the first time. (see photo). Once you have done this track, you end up back on Ridge Road, nearer the carpark.

Espresso Blast
At the time of writing, Espresso Blast is being logged, and it looks like a goner for the time being.
So head on down Ridge Rd back to the car!
