Mammoth 200823rd November 2008 The venue for this year's Mammoth was quite different to previous years. Rob Hambrook set a new course starting from Easby Park in Richmond heading up Lookout Rd to hook in to the middle of Slippery Rail. With light drizzle this track lived up to its name. From there it was down Walters Wiggles, Escalator, to the bottom of Cypress Garden then up the creek from there to follow single track, 4WD roads and driveways, emerging at the top of Harts Rd. Then it went south on Hill St, through the track to Hill St South which it followed for a few hundred metres before turning east up a private drive and 4WD roads to gain the top of the Richmond Hills. The drop in to Aniseed Valley was down steep, muddy skidder tracks and private driveways before following the road to Twin Bridges, turning left up Meade Rd. Shortly after a left turn on to the Goat Hill Rd for a couple of kilometres then up Stratford Rd ducking under trees and over logs before regaining Goat Hill Rd and heading up to near the top of the hill. A series of 3 steep firebreaks were descended to a crossing of the Roding River which in places was up to the waists of the more vertically challenged. Once across the river it was down the road to Heslops Rd (German Gully) and up that to the top of the Richmond Hills again. Left through the gate in the saddle below the cellphone tower and down an increasingly slippery track to turn right on to Fowler Rd. Up Fowler Rd to hook in to an even more slippery Slippery Rail. From there is was slither down Rail Terminus, Walter's Wiggles, Powerline, Loadstone Gully and Lost Time with a greasy finale through the macrocarpas to the finish. No one managed to clean the single track down from Fowler Rd to the finish.
Total distance was 32.4 km with 1610 metres of climbing.
