‰This track is an example of how far $8000 will go when spent by the NCC through Nelmac, and an opportunity to assess how a trail constructed solely with a 12 tonne digger shapes up. You'll see that this trail opens up a whole new blank canvas of public land right on Nelson's doorstep, and out of the way of any logging operations on Sharlands and Fringed Hills. The only area not available is the fenced pastoral land on your right hand side before reaching the tree line.‰
Dogs allowed if under control, there are sheep in the area.
The track can be ridden in both directions, though it‚s a real grind going Codgers to Atmore. It's more likely to be used the other way or as a route out from the Firebreak down from Sharlands Trig.
It also solves the long-lived problem of where to go from the Sharland Hill Trig! Now it's down the firebreak with the option to go right back to town, or left back to Codgers! And up again for another go!
This now becomes another route into the whole Tantragee area and if you want to improve your fitness, take this route to the Tantragee instead of up Brook Street! To get to the start of this track, find your way up Nile Street to the turn off to the Maitai Valley. Instead of going left up the valley, go straight ahead over the bridge into Cleveland Terrace.
Waypoint 1 ˆ (S41 16.597 E173 17.982) Turn off and bridge.
Grind your way up Cleveland Terrace to the Atmore Terrace turn off and turn left up Atmore Terrace
Waypoint 2 ˆ (S41 16.738 E173 17.943) Turn off to Atmore Terrace
Grind on up Atmore terrace switching back and on up to a sign that says Private Driveway. Ignore the sign and carry on up, turning left and on up to a dead end with a couple of gates, one of which has the standard Nelson City Council „dogs will be shot‰ sign. This is the start of the track
Waypoint 3 ˆ (S41 16.881 E173 17.865) Start Of Track
Go through the two gates and on up to a third gate on the right at the top of the slope which has orange walking and no hunting signs. Cross this gate and then grind your way up to the top where the firebreak comes down and joins it. The summit of the track is just past this point. If you want a short cut to the top and you don‚t mind pushing your bike you can go up the firebreak to the Sharland Hill Trig, though it‚s a lot more fun the other way!
Waypoint 4 ˆ (S41 17.234 E173 18.214) Track Summit
From here it‚s a fantastic downhill cruise to the pipeline through the pines. The track will improve with age and use. At the bottom you come to an intersection that allows you to join back on to Codgers, or you can carry on to the left and follow the pipeline through to join Codgers near the point it joins the road again.
Waypoint 5 ˆ (S41 17.486 E173 18.151) Short Cut To Codgers or down to Brook St.
Waypoint 6 ˆ (S41 17.468 E173 18.548) Exit onto Tantragee Road.
