Mountain biking Nelson - Fringe Hill

Fringe Hill Heading:

If you're abit of a climbing junkie and want to get the best vantage point for views over Nelson then Fringe Hill's your type of ride. Dominating the hills behind Nelson the summit of Fringe Hill sits at 793 meters above sea level, compare that to the top of Centre of New Zealand (Botanical Hill) at around 150 meters and this gives you an idea of just how high it is.

fringe_view3:

To reach the top you're looking at a 7 kilometre climb from the Brook Valley along a 4wd track which winds it's way through pine forest to the top, you don't have to feel intimidated by the climb though, just pace yourself and focus on those views at the summit.

Very near the top you'll get to a fork in the road where going right will take you back back down to the Dun Mountain Walkway and the Brook. To get to the very top though turn left and then right up a steep and rough 4wd track, this brings you to a clearing with some small buildings on it. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the views overlooking Nelson and Tasman Bay.

Tackling a section of the 4WD track from the summit.

Steep descents and loose rock make this a real thrill!

From here you can either head back down the 4wd road where you came or to the Dun Mountain Walkway and Brook via the track at the fork below (teal). If you're still feeling fresh you can take the track from Fringe Hill to Third House (cyan) and then back to the Brook via the Dun Mountain Walkway. This takes approximately and hour along a technical single track and is best done in dry conditions, please ensure you have a map with you for this ride.
