Strategic Plan
 NELSON MOUNTAINBIKE CLUB STRATEGIC PLAN 2010 - 2015 Posted November 5th 2009
This document represents the 2nd version of the NMTBC's strategic plan and focus, after the issue of the first 2008-2010 plan. It reviews strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities; presents a series of statements relating to the NMTBC vision, mission, values and objectives; and sets out the club's proposed strategies and goals.
The strategic plan's purpose is to guide the Club in its operational focus. As such, the plan is a living document and will be amended over time to take advantage of strategic opportunities and improvements.
Vision The vision of NMTBC looking forward 5 years is: To be actively managing an extensive and continually developing and expanding network of beginner, intermediate and advanced MTB trails, in active co-operation with NCC, TDC, Hancocks and other interests.
Mission Statement The central purpose and role of our club is defined as: Great Trails; Great Rides; Great Events, with a focus on providing a quality MTB riding facility that suits all abilities from the young kids, through to the older generation; from the beginner to the seasoned professional rider.
Our Values The values governing the Club's development will include the following: Enjoyable MTB rides Affordable MTB events Inclusion of all abilities
Our Objectives: Longer term objectives of our Club are summarised as: Growing membership Significant strategic partners - forestry, local government and corporate Sustainable infrastructure of trails Development of talented riders Events portfolio relevance to local community Events portfolio desirability for out of region participants eg: NZ MTB Cup/National Champs etc
Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats & Opportunities This strategic plan addresses the following key strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities for the Nelson Mountainbike Club:
Strengths: Membership numbers Membership networks Popularity of sport Experience of committee Relationships with land access partners Existing trail network Managed 'cluster' approach to trail management Finances MTBNZ affiliation Local Body support
Threats: Forestry industry for access Relevance to members Rapid evolution of sport
Weaknesses: Trail maintenance Recreational events programme Member communications Member support of events
Opportunities: Further trail development Relationships with 'outside industry' Member new-trail building Further corporate event/club sponsorship Broad-appeal events
Key Strategies: The following strategies will be pursued by our Club: New trail building Member-volunteer mobilisation to help build new trails Utilisation of Contractors, PD workers and Council for trail building Managed 'cluster' approach to trail maintenance programmes Organised recreational rides Tailor all club organised events and races to meet members needs Relevant website, letterhead, logo, newsletter Assist members in organising Club Race and Recreation MTB events Continue with management of Hancocks Forest Access Permit for members Continue expanding formal agreements for access within Tasman
The following important strategies will also be followed: Efficient committee meetings Realistic expectations of committee members to ensure retention Formalise and adopt club constitution at 2009 AGM Seek membership input for important decisions and initiatives Regular newsletter and update emails to members
Major Goals: The following key 'Great Trails' projects are earmarked for the next 10 years: End 2009 Completion of Sharlands Valley Trail Stage One (Wiggles - Bob's Fern). Hira forest, Hancock FM key partner Reinstatement of Meades Rd trail (twin bridges, Aniseed Vly). Hancock FM key partner South Branch upgrade completed. NCC key partner Mid 2010 Completion of Sharlands Valley Trail Stage Two (Bob's Fern to 3km mark). Hira forest, Hancock FM key partner, intermediate level '629' project completed. Sunshine Ridge to Smiths Ford, Maitai Vly. NCC key partner, advanced level trail Completion of Barnicoat Stage One (Jenkins firebreak to weir). Marsden Vly, NCC key partner, intermediate level trail End 2010 Completion of Sharlands Valley Trail Stage Three (3km mark to main carpark). Hira forest, Hancock FM key partner, beginner/intermediate level. Completion of Barnicoat Stage Two (full traverse). Marsden Vly, NCC key partner, intermediate level trail 2010-2011 Codgers Trail Network expansion to Hancocks estate (Sharlands Hill). NCC and Hancock FM key partners, beginner/intermediate level 2010-2012 Richmond Trails expansion. TDC and PF Olsen key partners, beginner/intermediate level 2010-2015 Rabbit Island Trails expansion. TDC and PF Olsen key partners, beginner level 2010-2020 Ex-Doc Reserve management, Hira Forest. Management programmes implemented in this 28ha block including pest control. Key partners NCC, DOC, Hancock FM 2011-2012 Development and completion of Battletrack, Kaka Hill. Hancock FM key partner Development of Piper≠s Reserve loop trail under NCC Resource Consent. NCC key partner. 2011-2013 Codgers Trail Network expansion to NCC estate (Sharlands Hill/Cleveland Tce ROW). NCC key partner, intermediate level trail 2011-2020 Corridor suburban edge routes planned and developed in line with pace of residential development in Marsden/Enner Glynn valleys and through to Richmond. 2012-2013 Third House to Jenkins Hill link reopened, parallel to Brook Sanctuary fence section. NCC key partner, intermediate/advanced level trail 2012 Fringed Hill alternative descent to existing ŒClassic≠. NCC key partner 2013-2016 Comprehensive Fringed Hill trail network developed (pending NCC land purchase after logging). NCC key partner, full range of different level trails including cross country trails and downhill trails 2015-2020 Full time, paid Nelson Trail Care Crew responsible for management and maintenance of MTB assets.
